Dear Miley Cyrus

You’re famous now, so you’re obviously not allowed to be a teenager and take pictures in your bathing suit.

I know it’s a bummer, but all the old people need something to pretend to be upset about when they are really just checking out your butt. I guess they don’t realize you’re a kid, and you’re going to do things that don’t please the world. Or, maybe they do and this is a great way to sell magazines.

I imagine that is a question for the therapist you will be seeing later on in life.

Good luck!

Lost

After one and a half seasons of Lost I have compiled a list of reasons why it is by far the worst television show on the air.

  • Gilligan’s Island of the 21st century. Maybe they’ll get off the island / the radio will work / a new character will show up.
  • Season one can be summarized as: Something bad happens - assign blame at random and blow everything out of proportion. How many times can we hear “Well who else could have done this” and then spin the wheel of blame.
  • There’s no “good guy”. Most shows have at least one character I can find some redeeming qualities in. Season two of Lost removed any decent qualities from these characters. Even Locke and Jack are now making decisions purely to increase the drama. Decisions their season one characters would have never made.
  • Michael’s character is by far the whiniest and most melodramatic, nonsensical role I have ever had to witness. His description could be summed up as: “Think a random thought then do something stupid about it.”
  • See something relevant to everyone’s well being. Keep it a secret. Act a fool.
  • Timer at four minutes. Create drama to enter the code with 1 second remaining. Oof.

And with all of that said I am still watching. Why? Same reason I watch heroes. By using the constant cliffhanger format I feel like now that I have invested so much time into this train wreck I need to find out what happens. Let’s see how long this will last.

NASA’s new Orion Space Vehicle

After reading about the 50th Anniversary of NASA at Kottke I stumbled across information about the new Orion Space vehicle.

My thoughts:

After searching around their site and reading up on the new Orion capsule I found it a little strange that they were going back to the old school way of designing the crew cabin (looking just like the Apollo capsules but 2.5x bigger). The one thing that seemed to really stick out was how they now have to go backwards in terms of landing this thing. I always felt that one of the real advances over the last 40 or so years was being able to land their shuttles on a runway instead of dropping their astronauts in the ocean and then sort of bobbing for apples.

I tried to poke around to see if this has been addressed, and all I was able to find was an article from Dec 2007:

Seems this thing may be capable of landing on ground but with almost a ton of extra cargo. So after 50 years they have almost completely reverted to their original design AND execution!

So sad, so true.

I think I’m getting cynical.

Seems overly complicated, but with a great result.
